Travel is about discovery, a journey to stimulate the creative spirit. The inspiration for these paintings comes from a three months trip. Firstly to Britain, Wales and Ireland. Next was Malta, Budapest, Prague and Vienna Lastly we returned to beautiful France.
Many galleries were visited along the way. The pleasure of first hand contemplation of master works provided inspiration and invaluable insight into the artists hand at work. If you are making work about a particular experience and place, time needs to be spent absorbing that landscape.
Walking the cliffs of Dover while visualising Constable and Turner painting on those cliffs, experiencing Klimt's Vienna and imagining Caravaggio walking the streets of Valetta in Malta is invaluable to an artist's imagination . Most of my work starts out en plain air with quick sketches and watercolours to capture first impressions. Then the painting takes on it's own life balancing between what is seen and experienced, with a spontaneous and instinctive approach.
